A Brief Overview
We manufacture a line of comfortable, well crafted, aesthetically pleasing furniture manufactured by our own craftspeople using the finest quality sustainably harvested teak and recycled teak. This beautiful honey colored wood is ideal for outdoor furniture and will last indefinitely without maintenance. We have made the unusual step, at least in the furniture industry, to sell direct to the public. Thus avoiding the multiple mark ups that get added to the product as it travels through the various distributors.
What do we do?
We build furniture not kit sets. Our seats on our outdoor chairs are flush with the rails of the chair and finished appropriately for a look that would not be out of place in a fine dining room. Our chairs are comfortable with or without cushions.
Our furniture is crafted using both modern machinery and traditional craft. Mortise & tenon joinery, modern adhesives, and correctly seasoned wood is at all times used. We take pride in our furniture, we take pride in our customer support, we love what we are doing. We hope that you will enjoy our product at your house.
Quality Furniture Starts With Great Manufacturing
Substance in areas where a little more is necessary. Our Shearwaters Garden Bench is a classic example. Our standard size is 6' not 4' or 5' and the size is correct for the piece. We don't even offer a 4 foot bench. 6' is our standard size for this bench. Our scantling sizes are correct for the bench, the seat is wide and comfortable, The seat slats are positioned so that an end slat is at a comfortable position without the need for cushions. Aesthetically our products have the right scale. Where it is appropriate for a larger piece of wood we use it, When scale dictates a more appropriate size we use it. Our products all reflect this philosophy.
On our Shearwaters collection of Chairs we have attempted to create a perfectly proportioned line of chairs for relaxing or dining. Importantly the furniture both had to have rugged engineering for outdoor use plus graceful non clunky design. Our aesthetic was to not cut down a bench design for this chair. We believe we have accomplished this with our graceful curved front leg, proportional scantlings and furniture finish.
Like fine chefs a good piece of furniture design is best implemented with the best materials, prepared correctly and presented for the appropriate venue. We have selected only the best teak, known for its distinctive honey color. We only use Teak from Sustained Yield Forests or recycled teak. The timber in our furniture is from sustained yield forests subject to direct and strict governmental controls. We have seasoned our timber appropriately with both a combination of air drying and kilning, the way it is meant to be done. Our seasoning process produces stable wood that is ideal for furniture construction. We try to use recycled materials when we can. This usually is more costly to do than using new timber but the benefits occur in a more stable and more beautiful timber. Many of these recycled timbers were from trees milled almost 100 years ago and they cannot be seen today in the plantation grown trees that are rushed to harvest these days.
Our planter boxes exemplify our commitment to producing the right product for our customers. We discussed with nurserymen and landscape architects what would be the correct size for a planter box. After their input we created a series of generously proportioned boxes that reflect American needs and requirements.
How do we do it?
We operate a showroom in Newport and sell direct via the internet and over the phone. We work extensively with designers, landscape architects, architects and commercial clients, and will arrange site visits to discuss your requirements. We own and operate our own manufacturing facility.
Care of Your Furniture
Teak furniture is normally left untreated, our teak furniture is delivered with the wood in its natural state unless requested otherwise. Sun and rain gradually will cause the naturally honey colored wood to take on a silver-gray patina. In the long run, this traditional approach means less work. We will at additional expense finish the furniture in marine grade paints or oil or spar varnish certain products for our customers. Varnished teak is beautiful to look at and ideal for inside use.
